When I don't have the pleasure of walking on sun drenched tropical beaches or strolling the warm city streets of far off lands I pretty much have to grin and bear the Scottish weather. Today was no exception - it chucked it down! I couldn't quite find any kangeroos or Japanese temples around so made do with leaves and fungi.

Out and about today there was a distint Autumnal feel in the air. As I ventured into some nearby woodland leaves were already dropping to the forest floor and toadstools seem to have popped up everywhere. This small Silver Birch leaf stood out nicely among a patch of deep green moss.

Fallen leaves and this patch of lichen on a moss covered rock provided for a very pleasing natural arrangement. And yes, I admit that I may have moved the leaf just a wee bit!

I did a spot of gardening today (of sorts), getting macro shots of some of the brilliantly coloured flowers in bloom.

Getting out of the garden, a walk through some local woodland provided some very green shots indeed. The forest floor was just teeming with life which can often make the job of finding the ideal subject difficult. You have to somehow find sense and simplicity out of the chaos that surrounds you.

16th August 2008 - Up close and personal

Sticking with the theme of all that is small I did a bit of hunting at the weekend and caught some cheeky amphibians. A basic portable set crafted out of an old seed storage box provided the ideal lighting and backdrop for some very personal close ups. The models were all well behaved apart from some excited hopping and were returned to the exact spots they were captured. What impressed me most with these shots is just how colourful the little toad turned out to be. On first glance you may think they are dull and brown but just take a look at the colours on this chap.

Just a short fifteen minute drive from my home in Stirlingshire and I'm deep within the countryside. Very often you can walk for miles through a landscape, looking for the perfect sunset or waiting for wildlife to spring out on you. It's only when you take the time to analyse your surroundings that you begin to realise that there is beauty everywhere on a much smaller scale.
